Why Indian dancers wear ankle bells?
My son is 9 years old, asked me when I was watching TV and I saw the girls Indian dancing to traditional music. One thing I found very interesting is that had bells tied around their ankles. We Japanese have no such custom instrument to use ankles, so I asked why they do it. Does it have any special meaning, other than making sound in harmony with music? If anyone knows please tell me, I could not respond to my son.
In my view, dancers use of ankle bells and rhythm – reasons while improving the sound of the drum and a better projection of their movements to the audience. These decorative ornaments handed down from mother to daughter, from father to son, and thus could be a family ritual, but I would say that this practice has nothing to do with their spirituality, unless used by their shamans.
